Art and Design

Art lovers—and those who would like to be—can look forward to outstanding exhibitions this spring. While London offers the chance to admire the work of Henry Moore in a stunning setting, the who’s who of the art world is gathering in Venice for the latest edition of the Art Biennale—and in Switzerland where Art Basel is taking place, as it does every June.

The sculptures of the British artist Henry Moore require ample space to fully unfold their impact. The Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew offer precisely this opportunity, promising to become a magnificent backdrop for this unique exhibition of Moore’s work. Both rarely seen sculptures and world famous pieces will be on display. The retrospective at the Royal Botanic Garden will be the largest to date devoted to the artist, who died in 1986 and was convinced that nature—which had a profound influence on his work—was the ideal exhibition space for his sculptures.

The more than 90 bronzes, stone and wood carvings, prints, and drawings not only provide an overview of Moore’s artistic output but also illustrate his personal development over the decades, creating a previously unseen portrait of the sculptor.

The 61st edition of the Venice Biennale is a special one, dedicated entirely to the memory of curator Koyo Kouoh, who passed away unexpectedly last year. In consultation with her family, the exhibition will go ahead despite her death, transforming all of Venice into a work of art.

In Minor Keys places emotion before didacticism and focuses on the freedom of artistic expression. The 111 invited artists, collectives, and organizations come from all over the world; what unites them is a shared approach and artistic vision. This year’s Biennale therefore promises to be particularly diverse.

This year’s Art Basel expands its already global scope by adding 21 galleries exhibiting for the first time. This brings the total number of participants to 290, allowing the fair to present an impressive breadth of artistic work.

Highlights include the New York gallery Berry Campbell, which is exhibiting in Basel for the first time, focusing on female American photographers of the postwar era. Art Basel aims to showcase galleries specializing both in historical works and contemporary art, thereby highlighting the diversity of artistic production.

In addition, for the first time, Art Basel Award winners Nairy Baghramian and Ibrahim Mahama will unveil new artworks throughout the city—reinforcing the fair’s ambition to turn all of Basel into exhibition space.
