Church of Light
An Architectural Poem
In Chengdu, the Sino-French Science Park Church stands as a remarkable piece of architecture designed by Shanghai Dachuan Architects. Completed in 2019, this extraordinary structure serves as a place of worship and a symbol of the fusion of French and Chinese cultural elements, blending centuries-old traditions with contemporary design.
(Architecture) Inspired by the essence of southern France, the church evokes images of Provence’s lavender fields and the luminous art of the Impressionist era. It breaks away from traditional patterns of Catholic church architecture, embodying an implicit spirit in a uniquely distorted form, influencing modern Western architecture by challenging conventional norms.
The church’s minimalist yet expressive facade is striking. The pure white exterior plays with light and shadow, creating a dynamic visual experience that changes throughout the day. This design reflects the church’s core philosophy: expressing freedom, romance, and diversity through innovative forms and materials.
Inside, the church features a suspended dome that floats gracefully, enhancing the ethereal atmosphere. This design element cleverly conceals the supporting structure, creating a sense of weightlessness and serenity. The internal spaces blend seamlessly with external ones, enhancing fluidity and openness.
The choice of material: aluminum. For its ease of construction, and aesthetic appeal. This material ensured that every detail was meticulously executed, maintaining aesthetic elegance without compromising integrity. Even at night, the church’s lighting creates a subtle, serene glow, enhancing its inner light without overwhelming the surroundings.
Le Corbusier’s philosophy that “architecture is the refinement, right and excellent handling of all kinds of bodies in the sun,” resonates deeply with this church. The structure is a beautiful interplay of forms and light, where the volumes are clear and touchable, embodying a sense of beauty that transcends mere appearance. This church is not just a building; it is a beacon of cultural and spiritual synthesis, offering a serene retreat in the heart of a bustling city.
