Wassily Chair

(Design)This year, at Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Knoll drew from its roots to present new and re-defined ideas for contemporary ways of life. The brand introduced a contemporary reframing of its classic Bauhaus-era collections.

Revealing its archival reissue of the Tugendhat chair, the MR chairs and tables by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, as well as three new ultra-matte finishes for the Wassily chair, Laccio tables, and Cesca chairs and stools by Marcel Breuer. With three new finishes for four collections this release marks the first time the tubular steel collections will be commercially produced in the ultra-matte finishes and the colors of white, black and an archival dark red.

Wassiliy Chair

By Marcel Breuer

Marcel Breuer designed the Wassily chair in 1925. Artist Wassily Kandinsky, working at the Bauhaus at the same time as Breuer, was so enthusiastic about Breuer’s armchair that he got his own copy of the prototype before it went into production—in return the armchair was given Kandinsky’s name.

Tugendhat chair

by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

The Tugendhat chair was originally designed in 1929. The sophisticated lounge chair delivers comfort and versatility with a cantilevered base, leather strap back and sleek form. A pair of untufted cushions and optional armrests top the chair’s pleasingly kinetic frame.

The Tugendhat chair speaks to the Knoll architectural heritage. First known as the Federsessel (“spring chair” in English), five chairs were installed in the home designed by Mies and Lilly Reich for the Tugendhat family in Brno, Czech Republic. When photos of Villa Tugendhat were featured in the press, the chair was renamed.

Designed in 1927 these chairs represent some of the earliest steel furniture. The MR side tables were also included in the famous Tugendhat house. The design has been manufactured by Knoll since 1977.
