Seaside Modernism
by Dimorestudio
Latitude 43 is a modernist gem from the 1930s, designed by French architect Georges-Henri Pingusson. Perched above Saint-Tropez, the building blends Mediterranean lightness with the formal rigor of Bauhaus. Milan-based design duo Dimorestudio has recently reimagined two of its apartments – a subtle homage that weaves together maritime motifs, historical references, and a contemporary design sensibility.
(Modernism) In collaboration with a private family of clients, Dimorestudio designed two distinct yet interconnected apartments within the historic complex. The spatial concept draws on key architectural features of the building – from its striking window fronts and elongated corridors to its seamless relationship with the surrounding coastal landscape. Inside, nautical themes are subtly echoed throughout, reflecting the building’s seaside setting. It’s a quintessential Dimore project: refined, atmospheric, and unmistakably unique.
The design takes cues from a wide range of historical references – Bauhaus, Gio Ponti, and French interiors from the 1930s to the 1970s. This aesthetic is complemented by light woods, sisal flooring, and a soft, muted color palette that captures the light and ambiance of the Côte d’Azur.
Despite the building’s architectural strictness, there remained enough creative freedom to introduce modern elements – true to the studio’s ethos of reinterpreting historic spaces through a contemporary lens.
